Some relatively inexpensive hotel ideas to consider:
A European-style hotel with private baths on East 32nd Street: grandunionhotelnewyork.com
(about $130).
It gets good reviews from travelers on tripadvisor.com
(Clicking on review links will go directly to the review for
the cited hotel.)
Another interesting option: chelsealodgesuites.com
($195, suite w private bath) or chelsealodge.com
($110, sink/shower in room, but toilet shared).

Relatively pricey, but certainly convenient: grandnewyork.hyatt.com
It has been our experience that even when the hotel's web site indicates
no vacancies, you may be able to secure a reservation by calling the hotel
directly.
We don't have any personal experience with these hotels, so please let
us know what your experience is.
